Commonly Asked Questions

QUICK QUESTIONS

1. Who are you?

I am a Singaporean, and I have received a 2400 in the new SAT several years ago.

I am an alumnus of Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong Junior College, and a recent graduate of an Ivy League university.

2. What can you help me with?

I can help you in all three sections in the SAT. The Critical Reading section and the new Writing section, which may be challenging and unfamiliar to many, are my forte.

3. What methods do you use to tackle the SAT?

Practically none of those regular methods developed by Barron's, PR, and Kaplan. Methods from these guidebooks are designed to help students achieve only a very superficial improvement in their test scores.

Probably one of the reasons why you are visiting this site is because you are frustrated with all the "strategies" you have read in Barrron's, PR, and Kaplan guidebooks. The strategies in these guidebooks all seem to make sense, and you've tried your best to apply these strategies in your test, but your SAT score never improve beyond a certain level, and you keep making the same number of mistakes tests after tests.

My teaching methods will help you understand the very logic and system of the new SAT test. After my lessons, your accuracy of getting each SAT test question right will improve dramatically.

4. What are your lessons like?

My lessons are very focused, organized, and effective. My lessons are also very flexible; we can also focus just on your most problematic sections on the SAT. I will not waste your time making you do tons of irrelevant, generic drills/exercises that test prep agencies like to use. I will also not make you cram vocabulary words from impossibly long word lists. My lessons will simply turn you into an efficient SAT test-taking machine who can successfully tackle each SAT question with perfect accuracy.

5. Do you teach any SAT Subject tests?

Yes, I sometimes teach SAT Literature. My score on that test was a 790 (99th percentile).

6. Are your methods sure to work?

Yes. I am confident enough such that I am teaching SAT independently, and I will use none of the resources created by guidebooks such as Kaplan and Barron's or materials used by SAT educational agencies. I will teach you how to deal with real SAT questions by using genuine past SAT tests created by College Board.

7. Can you guarantee a 2400 score for ALL your students?

In all honesty, probably not. But a fair number of my best students have achieved scores of above 2300, and all my students have seen improvements in their test scores. Getting a 2400 is a tricky business, and it involves some hard work, some "natural aptitude" in taking standardized tests, and impeccable test-taking skills. I have developed an effective method to help all my students deal systematically with all kinds of questions in the SAT. After just one lesson, my students will definitely feel a lot more confident about tackling all kinds of SAT questions.

8. Who are your past students?

I started teaching in the summer of 2008, and have taught at least five students from each of the following schools: Raffles Junior College, Hwa Chong Institution, National Junior College, Anglo-Chinese School Independent, United World College SEA, and the Singapore American School.

Some of my past students who kept in touch with me are now attending prestigious universities in the U.S., including Stanford University, Harvard University, University of California - Berkeley, and Cornell University.

9. Who should approach me?

First, I should say that not all students need outside help in SAT preparation. But for those who do, most of them tend to see me as a "last resort." People usually turn to test prep guidebooks first. When I go to Kinokuniya or Borders, there is always a group of young students in the reference section checking out the expensive and bulky guidebooks and vocabulary builders published by Barron's, Kaplan, and Princeton Review. That is probably because most of their school friends use these books to help them prep for their SAT, and because everyone else uses these books, these books are seen as "reliable" and "effective" materials.

Buying a guidebook from a traditional test prep company seems like a great idea to most people. But if you use these guidebooks like all your friends do, you are also likely to continue struggling with the SAT just like everyone else does!

Learning how to ace the SAT by reading these guidebooks is like learning how to play the piano or a violin by reading music guidebooks - it just doesn't really work. You need a music teacher.

Why not choose to get guaranteed effective SAT guidance from someone who has aced the SAT himself? Save yourself time you would otherwise spend plowing through these thick Princeton Review and Kaplan books!

10. What is a good SAT score?

PDF: Composite Percentile Ranks, 2010, CollegeBoard

11. Many local test prep educational agencies in Singapore offer comprehensive SAT course packages. Why should I choose you instead?

The class sizes of SAT courses offered by test prep agencies are often quite large. The average class size is around 20, and some class sizes may be 30 or above. Besides, different students learn at different paces, and the instructor of group classes would usually cater to the lowest common denominator. If you sign up for such a course, you will not be receiving much individualized attention from your course instructor and you will not be learning at the pace that you're most comfortable at. Not only that, you will have little or no information about the academic background of the instructor(s) who will be teaching the course until after you have signed up for it.
My lessons, on the other hand, are one-to-one, and I pay full attention to the progress of each of my students. Why not also confidently choose an instructor who has personally done well on the new SAT exam?
